A majority of likely 2022 voters in Washington state support a ban on assault weapons like the AR-15 rifle, with more than fifty percent showing strong support, according to the poll more recent from the NPI.
Fifty-six percent of 1,039 voters polled last week by the NPI Public Policy Review said they supported the ban, while 38 percent opposed it. Only 6% are unsure.
52% indicated strong support and 31% indicated strong opposition. 4% were somewhat favorable and 7% somewhat opposed.
This finding shows that there is strong support for legislation in Washington to ban the sale, manufacture, transportation or importation of firearms designed to effectively kill large numbers of people.

Northwestern Study Says 1994 2004 Federal Assault Weapons Ban Worked
During the 1990s, the United States had a federal assault weapons ban, which reliable research shows has helped reduce mass shootings.
Unfortunately, that ban expired in 2004 and was never renewed by Congress, which was then under Republican control.
Seven states now ban assault weapons, including the District of Columbia, but Washington is not one of them. (The seven states are California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York.)
Our polls show that voters here are ready for the Evergreen State to take action and be among the states to ban assault weapons.

Our 2022 poll of 1,039 likely Washington state voters was in the field from Wednesday, June 1 through Thursday, June 2, 2022.
It uses a mixed approach, with automated calls to landlines (50%) and text message responses from mobile-only respondents (50%).
The poll was conducted by Public Policy Polling of the Northwest Progressive Institute and has a margin of error of +/- 3.0% at a 95% confidence interval.
U.s. Supreme Court Throws Out Rulings Upholding Gun Restrictions
In Konce County, home to more than 30% of the population, support for an assault weapons ban is 73%, with 68% strongly in favor and 19% strongly opposed. 7% were not sure.
One would think that eastern and central Washington would strongly oppose an assault weapons ban, given the local right wing.
50% of voters in eastern and central Washington support: 45% strongly, 5% somewhat. 43% oppose it: 38% strongly, 5% somewhat.
Support for an assault weapons ban also spans all ages, with a majority of all parties old enough to vote for an assault weapons ban.
After A Turbulent Year, Washington State Poised To Ban Guns At Protests, Capitol Grounds
Young voters between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine, who represent the future of Washington, are most interested. 74% of them (almost three-quarters!) support the ban, with 71% strongly supporting it and 3% somewhat.
Encouragingly, more than a fifth of voters who identify as Republicans (21%) support banning assault weapons, along with 90% of Democratic voters and 44% of independent voters . (Another 48% of independents say they are against it, while another 8% are unsure.)
This new finding is consistent with our previous research on support for gun safety laws in Washington state, which now goes back half a decade.
In 2016, we received tremendous support for Initiative 1491 (a major disaster prevention order), which passed easily. In 2018, we received strong support for Initiative 1639 (raising the gun purchase age and establishing safe storage requirements), which passed easily. Earlier this year, in February, we found a large group in favor of banning high-capacity magazines and banning firearms from local government meetings and polling places.
U.s. Gun Policy: Global Comparisons
The Legislature has taken significant steps in recent sessions to build on three popular voter-approved gun safety measures.
Next year, the Legislature should step forward and ban military-grade assault weapons from being sold, manufactured, transported or imported into Washington state.
